Failure to pay court-ordered support for a child can and often does come with serious legal consequences. One former football player is in hot water due to unpaid child support. Texas fans of Clint Session, a former linebacker for the Colts and Jaguars, may already be aware of his plight as a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
The ex-football player stands accused of owing nearly $400,000 in back child support payments. The payments are for a daughter. He was ordered to make payments amounting to $6,917 a month for the child.
The child is reportedly in need of ongoing medical treatment. Documents indicate she has brain damage and cerebral palsy. Part of the money owed is for medical expenses for the child. Session had a contract with the Jaguars that was said to be worth $11.5 million, but he left the NFL in 2011.
By not willfully not paying back due child support, Session may face possible jail time, incur additional legal fees and could end up with a criminal record. Texas parents who find they are behind in child support payments or parents who leave a lucrative job and then are unable to meet a child support obligation can inquire about ways to avoid the possibility of criminal consequences. One option for parents may be to seek a formal modification of an order for child support as this can pause payments or restructure the amount to a feasible number that still ensures support is paid for the benefit of the child.
