A 33-year-old woman was taken into custody in December 2013 on charges of allegedly kidnapping her two children, a 4-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy. On Jan. 14, the woman received a trial date of April 7. Her bond was set at $20,000. The father of the two children, who is a resident of Texas, was awarded custody of the children during the couple’s divorce proceedings. The woman was taken into custody in New York after allegedly fleeing with the two children from Livingston County, Michigan, where the couple’s divorce was finalized.

A warrant was issued for the woman after she left Michigan for New York with her children instead of returning them to their father, authorities said. Shortly before the woman was scheduled to return the children to their father, she was seen packing her van with personal items, according to police. A tip led authorities to Saranac Lake, New York, where they found the woman and the two children. Charges against the woman originated in Michigan because the couple’s divorce was handled there.

Child custody orders become a matter of law and are subject to enforcement. The charges can range from a misdemeanor to a felony depending on the infraction. During Trial Set For Woman Accused Of Kidnapping Her Own Children”, January 14, 2014
