Child support division in Texas recognized as nation's best

When a divorcing couple has children, in many cases the custody and child support determinations are some of the most difficult parts of the process. A parent who is slated to receive the payments may feel a great sense of relief once that matter is determined. That is not always the end of the struggle however. It is possible that the parent responsible for making those payments may renege on that responsibility. That can leave a custodial parent unsure of how he or she will cover expenses related to the children.

To help with the enforcement piece, each state has an infrastructure in place to facilitate child support payments. The program in Texas was recently recognized for its successes. The National Child Support Enforcement Association named it as the best in the nation. The award was presented at NCSEA’s 2014 Annual Training Conference and Expo. This is the second time the state has been the recipient of the award from NCSEA.

This designation was the result of the state of Texas ranking first in nation regarding cost effectiveness, collections per full-time employee and total collections. For the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2014, the state collected more than $3.6 billion in child support. The state’s average collection of $11.61 for each dollar spent was far higher than the average for the entire nation--$5.47.

Attempting to get an individual in the state of Texas to pay child support owed can be a difficult endeavor for custodial parents. On the flipside, parents who owe money but whose situation suddenly changed making it impossible to make the payments face difficulties as well. In either situation a party would likely benefit from working with a lawyer who handles child support matters.
