Telltale clues that men cheat

We recently discussed some of how women cheat. Now we turn the tables to highlight common clues to recognize in men. As we said before, there are common signs that are non-gender specific guilty behavior – including longer hours at work, changing passwords or new techniques in bed – but the clues below tend to be linked more closely to male behaviors.

Common examples

Adapted from a longer list, the following scenarios may be all too common in the relationship:

  1. Out with the boys: Going out with guys is not the issue, but there are red flags when he says they are going to a game but then does not remember the score or other broad details afterward.
  2. The boys may have a weak link: The affair may be an open secret among his friends, and one of them may start to consciously or unconsciously drop hints.
  3. Proven track record: There may be reconciliation after a previous one-night stand or affair, but past indiscretions often mean there are more to come.
  4. Not fighting over the TV remote: This can be because he is either trying to avoid causing waves or because he has retreated to the mancave for privacy.
  5. Finding condoms: Long-term monogamous relationships rarely involve condoms, so it’s a red flag if some turn up in a luggage compartment or the pocket of a suit.
  6. Showers immediately upon arriving home: He may be aware enough to know that he has the smell of perfume, cigarettes or some other incriminating odor that will be obvious when he gets into bed.
  7. Home Depot runs take three hours: Guys get distracted at the hardware store, but there are problems if these trips now routinely take three hours and they “left their phone in the car.”
  8. Make-up on a shirt: Some guys are huggers, but it is worth noting if he comes home with smudges of mascara, lipstick or foundation more than once or twice over several months.
