Some family law issues cannot wait

These are unprecedented times with many businesses closed and employees furloughed or out of work. Even the courts here in Texas are on a limited schedule, with many cases on hold. Nevertheless, this does not mean that a need goes away. Families sheltering in place has left experts concerned over the safety and well-being of family members when the home is not a safe or happy place to be.

The courts may be on a limited schedule. However, family law matters like divorce and custody disputes can still be safely handled online through video conferencing platforms like Zoom or Skype. These options were often utilized by law firms before the pandemic to conduct business, mainly when couples did not live in the same city.

Mediation can be legally binding

The courts are looking at different ways to hold hearings, but clients can still move forward using mediation to address divorce or areas of dispute. Typically, this format is faster and more economical than going through the courts, but it still can be legally binding if the couple agrees.

Perhaps the case needs to be heard in court. If this is the case, the two sides can still use mediation to resolve many issues before the court date, only leaving the areas where the two sides remain furthest apart to be addressed by the courts.

A short-term or emergency solution

Some issues simply cannot wait. Remote mediation or negotiation can offer temporary agreements on such pressing issues as:

a) Conservatorship or custody

b) Visitation

c) Child support

d) Modifications

Keeping everyone safe

The goal is to keep everyone as safe as possible using whatever means we have at our disposal. This may require some creative thinking and adapting to unusual situations. Those with family law concerns, pressing or long-term, can still work with an experienced Board-certified Family Law expert attorney in Collin County, Dallas County, Denton County, Midland County, Ector County, and surrounding areas of the state to address their matter.
