Tips for saving money on your Texas divorce

Even in a high-asset divorce, there are things you can do to mitigate costs. Retain the wealth you have worked so hard for.

While you may have a lucrative career and/or many assets in Texas, that does not mean you have to settle for spending more than necessary on your divorce. Do not let your split or your soon-to-be-ex-spouse take a dime more than necessary as you work toward closing one stale chapter of your life and starting fresh one. Keep these tips in mind.

Remember that your attorney is not your therapist

Your attorney is there (and trained) to provide you with legal advice, not emotional or psychological insight. It is true that your attorney will come to know a lot about you and your life during the divorce process, but that level of access does not qualify her or him as a mental health professional to console you.

Remember, you have to pay for all the time you spend with your attorney. The same is true for a therapist, but at least you are paying for expert advice from someone with the professional background to hopefully give you the help that you may need.

Have a list of goals

What are you hoping to get, and how do you want to feel once your divorce is complete? Write down all your goals, no matter how minor, and share them with your attorney. That way, your attorney should know how best to handle your case to turn your dreams into as much of a reality as possible as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Write down your wants and needs (and know the difference between the two)

In a high-asset divorce, there are likely to be arguments over major assets. Depending on how long the marriage with your soon-to-be-ex-spouse lasted, you may already have a good idea of what she or he will fight for. Decide what you are willing to give up and what you can part with. There needs to be a clear distinction between what you “want” and what you “need.” Why spend billable hours arguing over a lamp you can just replace with a quick online shopping trip?

Come to your attorney’s office well-prepared

Do not wait until the last minute to get all the necessary paperwork ready for a meeting with your attorney. Ask your attorney what legal and financial paperwork you need to sign and the documentation you need to bring with you. Gather everything you can, and let your attorney know ahead of time if there is a document you cannot find. Besides saving money, organization saves you time, allowing you to finalize the divorce as quickly as possible.

You have worked hard for your lifestyle in the great state of Texas. Do not let your current legal situation drain your finances more than necessary. Financial stability is one of the greatest victories of all.
