Missing child in Texas returned to grandparents

| Oct 29, 2013 | Child Custody |

Shortly after the Copperas Cove Police Department announced a suspected interference with a child custody case involving a missing child, the 2-year-old was returned to her grandparents. The toddler was taken from them by the biological mother on Oct. 23, but the grandparents had legal custody of the child.

The grandparents alerted police to the missing child. Police suspected that the mother was heading to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, but they did not what kind of vehicle the two were traveling in. Police released a description of the mother and daughter to the public for help in finding the pair. The Texas Rangers assisted with the case and helped the child to be returned on Oct. 24. The mother was then taken into custody.

Child custody issues can easily get complicated, especially when biological parents do not have custody of their own children. They may feel entitled to spending time with their children even if they do not have a child custody arrangement in place or their parental rights asserted. However, individuals who have joint custody or sole custody have an enforceable court order that provides specific information about their rights. Even biological parents must adhere to the parameters established by these court orders.

Texas family law attorneys may be able to assist individuals with establishing their parental rights. They may also help parents through child custody litigation. This situation may arise when one parent or another individual who has acted in the role of a parent wishes to get custody of the child or visitation rights. A family law attorney may be able to assist these individuals by helping to prove that it is in the best interests of the child to be with his or her client. The court may look to several factors in making this determination, including the value of the existing relationship with the parent and the best interest of the child.
